Market cap vs liquidity: size versus the exit

Market cap is price times total supply, a paper value that shows how big a coin looks. Liquidity is the SOL actually sitting in the pool, which decides whether you can sell. A coin can have a huge market cap and almost no way out.

What is market cap?

Take the current price of one token and multiply by the total number of tokens. That is market cap. If a coin has 1 billion tokens at $0.001 each, the market cap is $1 million.

It is useful for size. A $50K coin and a $50M coin are different worlds. But it is only a label. Nobody has put $1 million into a $1 million coin. The last trade set the price, and the formula did the rest.

What is liquidity?

Every coin trades against a pool of SOL. When you buy, your SOL goes in and tokens come out. When you sell, tokens go in and SOL comes out. Liquidity is how much SOL is in that pool right now.

Liquidity is what you sell into. It is shared with every other holder. If three people sell before you, the pool is thinner when your turn comes.

Why does the gap matter?

The relationship between the two numbers is the real signal.

  • A $1M market cap coin with $4K of liquidity means almost nobody can sell. The number is big; the exit is tiny.
  • Under 10% liquidity to market cap is a common rule of thumb for a thin pool. Small trades swing the price hard.
  • Your own order moves the price too. Price impact is roughly your trade size divided by liquidity plus your size. Buying 1 SOL into a 5 SOL pool moves it a lot.
  • Some coins show liquidity that is not really sellable, such as a pool paired with a worthless token instead of SOL.

How MemeSim shows both

The coin page shows market cap and liquidity side by side at the top. MemeSim flags thin liquidity when it falls under 10% of market cap, and blocks buys on coins where the pool is so small that a sale would return nothing. The fill engine uses the pool's quote-side liquidity in USD to compute your price impact on every trade.

Read both numbers, every time. Market cap for size. Liquidity for whether you can leave.

Questions

Which number matters more?
Liquidity, if you ever want to sell. Market cap tells you how big the coin looks. Liquidity tells you whether the exit exists.
What is a healthy liquidity ratio?
Above 10% of market cap is a common rule of thumb. Below that, size down or skip.
Why does MemeSim block some buys?
When the pool is effectively empty, a buy would get you tokens you could never sell. MemeSim blocks it and explains why.
