Priority fee: paying Solana to confirm you faster

A priority fee is extra SOL you attach to a transaction so Solana's validators process it ahead of others. It is paid whether or not your trade succeeds, on top of the tiny base network fee.

What is a priority fee?

Every Solana transaction pays a base network fee of 0.000005 SOL. That is tiny, and when the network is busy, it is not enough to get you to the front of the line.

A priority fee is a tip added on top. Validators, the computers that confirm transactions, prefer transactions that pay more. A bigger tip means your trade is more likely to land in the next block instead of several blocks later.

When does it help?

Speed matters most on fast-moving coins. If the price is climbing and your transaction waits five blocks, your fill is worse or your slippage limit trips. A priority fee shortens that wait.

It helps less than people think on quiet coins. If nothing is moving, a cheap transaction confirms just fine and the extra SOL is wasted.

What does it cost over time?

Priority fees are small per trade and large in total. Keep these points in mind.

  • The fee is charged even when the trade fails. A slippage failure still costs you the tip.
  • Ten trades a day at 0.005 SOL each is 0.05 SOL a day, or over 1.5 SOL a month, before any other fee.
  • Trading bots often default to high tips. Check what you are paying rather than accepting it.

How MemeSim simulates it

MemeSim defaults the priority fee to 0.001 SOL and lets you set anything from 0 to 1 SOL per trade. Like the real network, a failed order still charges the priority fee and the base network fee. The receipt lists the priority fee, the network fee, the swap fee and the 1% platform fee as separate lines.

Because the fill delay is random, a higher fee does not buy a faster fill in the simulator. The point is to feel the cost on every receipt, including the failed ones.

Questions

Is the priority fee refunded if my trade fails?
No. On Solana and in MemeSim, the tip is paid for the attempt, not the result.
What priority fee should I use?
Enough to land in time on a moving coin, and close to zero on a quiet one. In MemeSim the default is 0.001 SOL.
Is the priority fee the same as the platform fee?
No. The priority fee goes to the network. MemeSim's 1% platform fee mirrors what trading terminals charge.
