KOL: the accounts that call coins, and the catch

A KOL, short for key opinion leader, is an account with a large audience that posts coins to buy. Some are honest, and many buy before posting and sell into the followers who buy after.

What is a KOL?

The term comes from marketing. In crypto it means an influencer on X, Telegram or YouTube whose posts move prices. A post that names a coin is called a call.

Followers see a call, buy the coin, and the price jumps. That jump is real. The question is who is selling into it.

What is exit liquidity?

The common timeline looks like this. The KOL buys. The KOL posts. The followers buy. The KOL sells. The followers' buys were the liquidity the KOL needed to exit at a profit. That is what exit liquidity means: you are the exit.

Some KOLs are paid by the dev to post. Some buy early with their own SOL. Either way the incentive is the same. The call comes after their buy and before their sell.

How do you judge a caller?

Follower count tells you nothing about whether their calls make money. Check these instead.

  • Look at the chart before the post. If the coin already ran 3x in the hour before the call, you are late and someone is leaving.
  • Track their record. What was the market cap when they called, and what happened after? A caller whose coins drop after every post has told you what they are.
  • Watch whether they disclose their own position. Honest callers say when they hold and when they sell.

How MemeSim handles calls

In MemeSim, every call shows the market cap at the moment it was posted and the hit rate of the caller. You judge people by their record, not their audience. When you buy from a call, you can tag the trade KOL / caller, and your strategy page shows whether that reason makes or loses fake SOL over time.

The KOLs and exit liquidity lesson covers the timeline in three minutes with a quiz.

Questions

Are all KOL calls scams?
No. Some callers share research and hold through their calls. The record tells you which kind you are following.
What does hit rate mean on MemeSim?
The share of a caller's past calls that went up after they posted. It is tracked from the market cap at the time of the call.
Should I buy a coin right after a big call?
Check the chart first. If it already ran before the post, you are likely late. Wait sixty seconds and read the coin page.
